The other day I was asked to take some more photos of Baby Fionnan Quigley whom I originally photographed when he was just one week old.
Both Paul & Roisin are clearly wonderful, devoted parents to Fionnan who even at this tender age, has some wonderful facial expressions that are just magical to capture. Just by looking into their eyes, I can really feel the bond they have between each other which is so clearly evident when in their company ... priceless!!!
Here are a couple of photos that I took yesterday morning of a friend of mine Kirsty and her horse Toby. The black & white photo is a single exposure whereas the colour version is actually a High Dynamic Range (HDR) image that I've processed twice. I wasn't sure how this would work out because HDR images require no less than 3 photos of differing exposures, and trying to explain to a horse to stand perfectly still for a second or two is challenging. Still, the carrots Kirsty gave Toby, bribed him a treat :o)
As promised in an earlier entry, here's a couple of photos from the photo shoot last week with our friends, Tim & Amanda. Out of all the photos I took on the day, I edited down to 24 which Amanda popped in and viewed today. I always find I get quite nervous when photos are viewed, and I put this down to the fact that I so want them to like them, which I'm happy to say Amanda did :o)
Pre Wedding Shoots like this serve well as they give the client added confidence in your ability to do a great job on their Wedding Day, and Tim & Amanda's Wedding on the 17th November, is one I'm really look forward to.
The venue, Layer Marney Tower in Colchester is absolutely stunning. So that, combined with a great looking couple who are clearly very much in love, is a gift for me as the photographer.
A few months back I wrote an entry in this blog about a friend who was leaving us all here in the UK to start a new life with his family down in Australia. Well, after a few hiccups along the way, (which were nothing to do with Mark) he's finally on his way and leaves the UK on the 29th October.
This delay however, meant I had the opportunity to take some more photos of him ... one of which I worked on in photoshop till the early hours so he could get a print of it, as this is his last day with us. The attached image is what I finally came up with.
All the best to you Mark ... as I said before, you will be missed BIG TIME!!!!
I'm off out later today to do a 'Pre Wedding Shoot' in Oxfordshire so I'll make sure I post some of the images on here once the clients have had their viewing. Meanwhile, I popped out this morning to a local florists to pick up some Calla Lillies that I wanted to photograph as I've been commisioned to design a 'Sympathy' card.
The lighting set up I used couldn't have been simpler. I put the flowers in a vase ontop of a small table and positioned this about 6 feet away from a window. I then hung a piece of plain black material about 4 feet behind them so the light didn't fall directly onto it and then photographed them side on to the window. Having soft diffused side lighting like this, helps to give the flowers a bit of depth as opposed to having light fall straight onto them which can flatten them out and make them look featureless.
Not too sure at this moment which I prefer ... the colour or the black & white version???
A mobile home that's been burnt to the ground wouldn't normally be the kind of subject to photograph but as I was driving by and had my camera with my ... what the heck :o)
Here's a photograph that I took this week whilst out and about of one of the vehicles used by Heathrow Airport Police to patrol outside of the airport perimeter.
I've never been sure of what to call the technique I use to create this kind of effect until the other day when one of my friends said that it looks like the film '300'. Now, I've not actually seen the film so I can't comment but hey, it's alot easier to call this the '300' technique rather than 'the arty, grungy, sort of drawing type technique' so I'm gonna go with it :o)
Now that I've got a new iMac (hmmmmmm) the editing process has really speeded up so I'm now managing to work through alot of my images at a faster rate of knots. Hey, on that note - if you find yourself working on photographs using photoshop you'll know that the program is a really RAM hungry and can slow your computer down to a crawl. If I was to offer any advice it would be to make sure you have as much RAM installed as you can- this not only helps to speed things up, but also makes you more creative cos you're more inclined to experiment if your computer doesn't take an age to do something.
Anyway, here's a few more shots from yesterday's 'Urban' shoot, and incase you were wondering, Barry does smile .. quite alot in fact ... I just asked him not to for these shots :o)
Here's a couple more of the photos I took of Jo Sharpe a few weeks back. These shots were taken during a pre shoot as I'm photographing his Bah Mitzvah in March 2008 and as always I think it's best to have a portrait session well in advance of a big event. Apart from other things, this helps build more of a relationship, which in turn makes the client more relaxed on the day and produces more natural looking photographs.
Despite the rain today I still managed to venture out and about 'scouting' for locations that can be used in the future for photo shoots. I spent the time with a real good friend, Barry Payne and after a spot of lunch we ended up getting off a few shots in some quite urban locations.
Whilst driving round we found an area under a motorway bridge - ideal for an 'urban' style photo because of the lighting and resident graffiti; plus it offered a break from getting wet.
All in all we took some 100ish photos so I'll be posting more of them here in the near future.

Here's another of the images I took during our day spent with my Uncle Jeff and Aunty Janet touring the relevant war sites around Normandy, France. This particular shot is of the Orne Canal; again a HDR image made from 3 bracketed shots, each 2 f/stops apart.
